Security Tips Everyone Should Know when It Comes to Online Banking

Mobile devices make it convenient for you to access your bank accounts when you're on the go, but it's essential to take steps to properly secure your accounts from virtual threats. Here are a few mobile security tips that you should follow when using online banking.

Use Strong Passwords

Online Banking Security Tips

One of the most important steps you can take to secure your online banking is to use strong passwords. You should avoid using the same password at multiple financial institutions, and your password should have the following characteristics:

  • Include letters, numbers and symbols
  • Incorporate capital and lowercase letters
  • Avoid using commonly guessed phrases or easy to access information (like your birthdate)

While experts disagree on exactly how often you should change your online banking password (some think changing your password too often results in passwords that are easier to guess), they do agree if you're notified of a security breach, you need to change your password immediately.

Activate Two-factor Authentication Whenever Possible

If your bank offers two-factor authentication for your online banking, make sure you activate it. In addition to inputting your password, a unique sign-in code will be sent to an account only you have access to (like your mobile phone number or email account). This adds an extra layer of security to your account.

Avoid Using Public Wi-Fi for Your Banking Needs

While Wi-Fi is convenient, it isn't always the most secure alternative. Avoid using it to access your online banking unless you're also using a virtual private network (VPN). Without a VPN, hackers can intercept your data transmission and steal your information. Instead of public Wi-Fi, consider using your phone's data for your banking tasks. Your data plan is typically much more secure than an unknown public Wi-Fi network.

Keep Your Banking Apps and Devices Updated

If you notice your banking app has an update, install it as soon as possible. Often, these updates include critical security patches that are a necessity for safe online banking. This also applies to updates for your laptop, PC or tablet. For your convenience, you might opt to enable auto-updates.

Never Respond to Requests for Personal Info

A common trick is for thieves to send text messages or emails that try to get you to click on fake links that disguise themselves as legitimate banking websites. Once you click the link, it steals your personal info, like your online banking login information. Never respond to any correspondence you didn't initiate, and always go to your bank's app or website before inputting your sign-in information.

Check Your Accounts Each Day

The sooner you spot potential theft, the easier it is to fix it. Sign in to your online banking each day and review your accounts for suspicious transactions. If you spot anything you didn't authorize, let your bank know as soon as possible.
