Top Fraud Trends to Avoid and How to Stay Secure

Quick Answer: Fraud is rapidly evolving. Scammers use emotional tricks and tech tactics to deceive their victims. Learning to recognize scams is your best first defense and we’re here to help you stay protected.

From mobile banking to online shopping, digital convenience has transformed how we live but it has also created new opportunities for fraud. According to the Federal Trade Commission, the top two scams where consumers lost more money in 2024 were investment scams, totaling $5.7 billion, followed by imposter scams at $2.95 billion. And those numbers don’t even capture the many scams that go unreported. At CCCU, we’re sharing the top fraud trends members should be aware of so you and your loved ones can stay protected and avoid becoming a victim.

Here’s What to Watch For

  • Impersonator Fraud: Scammers pose as distressed family members or officials, urging you to send money quickly. Spoofed phone numbers and convincing stories can make even the savviest person hesitate.

Quick tip: Hang up, pause, and call back using a trusted number before taking action.

  • Phishing Scams: You may receive emails or texts pretending to be from your bank, a popular retailer, or even a delivery company. They often include urgent language and links that can steal your information.

Quick tip: Don’t click on any links. Type the company’s official website into your trusted browser instead and verify the information.

  • Malware & Ransomware: Clicking unknown links on social media, pop-ups, or shady emails can install viruses that lock you out of your own device, demanding payment to restore access.

Quick tip: Keep your software updated and back up files regularly so you’re never forced to pay a ransom.
