From packing materials and movers to down payments on utilities, moving to a new home can be expensive. If you're planning for a move, here are some common expenses to prepare yourself and ensure your moving day goes smoothly:

Your Old Home
While packing and moving out of your current home, make sure you've planned for these possibilities:

  • Selling Expenses. Aside from real estate agent fees, selling a home often requires making minor repairs and sprucing up the outdoors to add curb appeal.
  • Storage Facilities. It may be necessary to place some items in storage while you're packing, planning and staging, especially if you're trying to sell a home instead of moving from a rental property.
  • Professional Cleaning. Professional cleaning services are often necessary during any move, especially if you're hoping to get a deposit back.

During the Move
If you're moving a long distance or your new home isn't immediately available, be prepared for these costs:

  • Transportation Costs. Moving trucks require a lot of gas. If you're traveling a long distance, there may also be plane tickets, pet transportation fees and other associated costs. Be sure to factor in food as well!
  • Moving Insurance. Protecting your belongings during a move can be tricky. Make sure your current homeowner's or renter's insurance policy covers moving or add it on to your policy if needed.

Your New Home
Once you arrive at your new home, it's time to begin unpacking and settling in. Make sure these items are budgeted:

  • Condiments and Cleaning Supplies. When packing for a move, people often dispose of half-used items, such as condiments and cleaning supplies, in order to save space. Keep in mind, you will need to repurchase all the necessities you leave behind. While these items may be individually inexpensive, they can add up to a considerable cost when purchased altogether. Before arriving at your new home, make sure you’ve calculated the cost of replenishing these goods, or plan on a way to keep them.
  • Utility Deposits. Some utility companies will require a deposit to start up a new account. If you already have a deposit from your old home, it may take a while for it to be refunded. In addition, if you're moving to a larger home or a new area, your utility expenses might be more than you're used to. Make sure you have enough to cover a new deposit, so you can get the lights on and take a hot shower as soon as you move in.
