Learn More about Fuel Economy

If you're conscious of the impacts of oil on our environment, choosing a vehicle with good fuel economy is critical.

Each year the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) compile the Fuel Economy Guide that features fuel economy data for new model year cars, sport utility vehicles and light trucks. This 2008 Guide contains fuel economy estimates which are based on updated EPA calculation methods (described in detail in the guide).

The DOE and EPA have also developed the fuel economy web site, www.fueleconomy.gov which contains a free electronic version of the 2008 Fuel Economy Guide and:

  • Updated data for new and used passenger vehicles dating back to 1985
  • Allows side-by-side vehicle comparisons
  • Contains vehicle-specific air pollution emission information and safety ratings
  • Offers fuel-saving tips

By purchasing a fuel efficient vehicle, you can save money, reduce our nation's dependence on imported oil, and promote cleaner air in our communities.
