Make Tax Time Easier
1099's, W-2's and more.
January means two things - writing the wrong year for at least a week, and the "Important Tax Information" envelopes replace the December holiday cards in the mailbox. Instead of letting them float around the house, pick a place for them and put everything together as it comes in the mail. A shoebox, folder or large envelope works well. Then when it comes time to prepare your taxes, just grab it and go! The IRS gets copies of most of the statements mailed to you, so the figures provided to you on them are crucial to ensure that your return makes it through the system quickly and without red flags.
Picking a preparer.
Decide who you want to complete your taxes early so they have ample time to complete them correctly - especially if the tax preparer is you. Waiting until the last minute creates extra stress for both you and your preparer, and the chances of making a mistake or forgetting an important piece of information is more likely. Mistakes increase your chance of an inquiry or audit, both things we'd all like to avoid.
What about electronic filing?
There are many benefits to filing electronically - file your taxes conveniently whether it's day or night, get your refund even faster, and save paper. There are many options available to file electronically:
-
Free File from the IRS is their authorized and secure option for filing electronically (learn more at irs.gov).
-
Tax preparation companies often offer it, but may charge for the service.
-
Tax software programs such as Turbo Tax® and TaxAct® not only help you prepare your return, but allow you to file electronically as well.
Deposit refunds directly to your account.
Regardless of whether you file your taxes electronically or the old-fashioned way, you can elect to have your deposit sent directly to your checking or savings account. All you'll need is the routing number and account number for where you'd like it to go. You'll have access to your refund sooner than waiting for a mailed check (many people get it in ten days). Plus, you won't have to worry about the check being lost in the mail or returned to the IRS for a bad address.
